Can't say about RHEL, but I did try MediaProxy myself on CentOS 5 and 6. Latest MediaProxy just doesn't run on CentOS 5. It's too old. You can run MediaProxy 2.4.4 on CentOS 5, but you'll have to install many things manually.

CentOS 6 is up to date enough, so installation was very straight forward for me, and I'm not a CentOS user...
